Everything the cultivators grew, they sold. Soon, there was excess wheat and prices started to fail; this wasn't enough to get them worried, though farmers started asking questions. Not long after, countries began borrowing wealth from one another - Australia borrowed from Europe, as did the French, to pay for the war, while Europe ended up borrowing from the US. It was no surprise when the US ended up with all the wealth, where the economic downfall originated.
